The story

“January. As always in the Camargue, the sky begins to brighten long before the sun reaches the horizon. I head toward Aigues-Mortes in this blue winter light. The breeder has given me instructions to find, on my own, a small group of three foals and their mothers out in the marshes. There are mornings when you wake up not knowing that your life is about to take an unexpected turn… That morning was one of them.

I find the horses easily, but out of fear or unfamiliarity with the animals, I keep my distance for a good hour, photographing them backlit in the magnificent light as the sun finally rises. The first images please me, and carried away by the beauty of the moment, I lose track of time… and forget my fears. I decide to move closer. Slowly. I don’t want them to walk away when they see me coming. I stop taking pictures. I fully embrace the present moment and soon find myself just a few meters from the group. One of the foals, a little more curious than the others, approaches me. I sit still, motionless. He comes close enough to sniff my arm, lick my face, and then lie down at my feet.

To me, a photograph is a very powerful keeper of memories—raw emotion captured in an instant. And the images I’m creating in this precise moment don’t need to be printed on paper to remain etched in my mind for life.”

Born in 1987, Jeremy Durand is a photographer, filmmaker and horse farm owner based in south of France. After producing and directing documentary films for various French TV channels, he decided to dedicate several years of his career travelling around the world to document the life of horses in their natural environment. Eventually, in 2018, all the family settled down in one of the most preserved area of southern France to create their own horse farm, the Mas de Peyrelongue. They now welcome horse riding guests, photographers and students from all over the world.
